In 1926 a 22 year old teacher from Brighton, Emily Howson, who was initially shy and diffident, embarks on the journey of a lifetime. Emily travels to India, where she has many adventures. Later on she joins the staff of the Maharajah, where she becomes a private tutor and governess to his two youngest children. While in the employment of the Maharajah at a dinner party one night, she meets a Texan oil magnate and his travelling companions who are driving across the world in a new Ford prototype vehicle. Emily is invited to join them, and her journey takes her across India, the Far East, the wilds of Australia, the serenity of the Pacific and on to Texas, where she works in the excitement of the oil industry. In 1939 when war breaks out Emily joins the Wrens, before being transferred to Bletchley Park, the famous WW2 codebreaking centre.
Years later when Emily is a very elderly lady, she tells the story of her epic and adventurous life, during which time she had met Gandhi, Churchill and Roosevelt. Her whole life had truly been a great adventure.
