At the outset of the Boer War, two former soldiers meet by chance at a London dockside. One of the soldiers is Harry Chesney, a former Colour Sergeant and Victoria Cross winner. Together they recount the captivating events of their lives in the regiment in India.

Following a tough childhood, Harry joins the army and soon rises through the ranks. However, after a devastating battle during an uprising on the northwest Frontier of India, his army career looks set to come to an inglorious end in the face of a desertion charge.Following his resignation and a series of adventures which take him around the world, Harry returns to England, only to find himself acting as guardian to an illegitimate son of a hero of his regiment…
